How to Recycle Plastics
Recycle plastics with these great projects

Recycling can seem like an overwhelming task to keep up with, but there are a few very simple ways to support the re-use and recycling movement.

A great general approach is to buy bottled water, food, and other items in packaging made from recycled plastics. For example, Dawn® dish liquid bottles are made with 25% post-consumer recycled material. And once a bottle is empty, recycle it in your neighborhood program or repurpose it into a new and interesting item, like any of the five ideas below:

Recycle Plastics Idea #1: Reuse plastic bottles as ice packs. After use, wash the bottle and fill about halfway with water. Freeze and keep on hand for soothing minor cuts and burns, or for keeping food cold in picnic baskets and packed lunches.

Recycle Plastics Idea #2: Cut off the top of plastic water bottles or two liters, flip up side down, and use them as funnels for adding ingredients to recipes or for controlling sequins, glitter, or confetti in craft projects.

Recycle Plastics Idea #3: Use the remaining bottom of plastic bottles as organizational containers. Mount the bottle halves to a wall or to a heavy-weight piece of cardboard as a place to keep track of tiny craft pieces, screws, nuts, bolts, or even hair ties. This helps organize pieces in one easy-to-find place and keeps clutter at bay.

Recycle Plastics Idea #4: The bottoms of plastic bottle can be more than a way to keep things organized. They can help beautify your space, too. Use them to plant beautiful single blooms, a small herb garden, or faux flowers. These practical vases could act as simple, beautiful accents for patios, porches, or window sills.

Recycle Plastics Idea #5: Fill plastic bottle with sand or small pebbles and use as a doorstop. Use your creativity and apply some ribbon, beads, or fabric to the bottle before showing it off as you’re the latest addition to your recycling efforts.
